SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

2008 British film directed by Danny Boyle, written by Simon Beaufoy. Set and filmed in India, the film tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Kaun Banega Crorepati in the Hindi version) and exceeds people’s expectations, thereby arousing the suspicions of the game show host and of law enforcement officials.

“Mamma Mia”

directed by Phyllida Lloyd

Mamma Mia!  is a 2008 stage-to-film adaptation of the 1999 West End musical of the same name, based on the songs of successful pop group ABBA, with additional music composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson.  It is the highest-grossing film musical of all time. The title originates from ABBA’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia“.

Meryl Streep heads the cast, playing the role of single mother Donna Sheridan. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård play the three possible fathers to Donna’s daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried).

Man on Wire winner of the 2008 Academy Award for Best Documentary directed by James Marsh. The film chronicles Philippe Petit’s 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center. It is based on Philippe Petit’s book, To Reach the Clouds, recently released in paperback with the new title Man on Wire.

The 5th Annual Outdoor Summer film Series will again take place in Van Vorst Park on Wednesday nights. Screenings in June and July will begin at about 8:30 or later depending on sunset. August and September screenings will begin at 8:00 pm. The rain date for each film will be the following Wednesday.
