September 19th Movie News….
We have decided to cancel our final movie of the season, The Tree of Life. Our turnout last week was fairly low compared to the rest of the season–so we surmised….summer’s over….Now that’s not to say free movies are done…who knows…there may be a Halloween or Christmas movie up our sleeves.
It’s been a great year…and once again…thank you to all that came out, supported, donated…

Thank You to our 2012 sponsors and all who made this 8th season of Films in Van Vorst possible. Volunteers from the Van Vorst Park Association and Friends of Van Vorst Park presented the films and provided the free popcorn. Our sponsors Jersey City Medical Center and Silverman:Building Neighborhoods provided the critical funding. All together, our 8th season was a huge success and we look forward to our 9th season next summer!
September 12th “The Artist” 8:00 pm
“The Artist”
directed by Michel Hazanavicius
The 2011 French film in the style of a black-and-white silent film. The story takes place in Hollywood, between 1927 and 1932, and focuses on the relationship of an older silent film star (Jean Dujardin) and a rising young actress (Bérénice Bejo) as silent cinema falls out of fashion and is replaced by the “talkies”.
It was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won five, including Best Picture, Best Director for Hazanavicius, and Best Actor for Dujardin, who was the first French actor ever to win for Best Actor. It was the first French film to ever win Best Picture, and the first mainly silent film to win since 1927’s Wings and Sunrise won best picture awards at the 1st Academy Awards in 1929. It was also the first film presented in the 4:3 aspect ratio to win since 1955’s Marty, and the first black-and-white film to win since 1993’s Schindler’s List.

The 1951 Musical starring Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron and Oscar Levant. The music is by George Gershwin, with lyrics by his brother Ira, with additional music by Saul Chaplin, the music director.
The story of the film is interspersed with dance numbers choreographed by Gene Kelly and set to Gershwin’s music. Songs and music include “I Got Rhythm “,”I’ll Build A Stairway to Paradise”and “Our Love Is Here to Stay”. The climax of the film is “The American in Paris” ballet, a 16 minute dance featuring Kelly and Caron set to Gershwin’s An American In Paris. The ballet alone cost more than $500,000
Winner of 6 Academy awards in 1951 including Best Picture!

The 1994 animated musical
The story takes place in a kingdom of lions in Africa, It tells the story of Simba, a young lion who is to take his father Mufasa’s place as king. However, after Simba’s uncle Scar kills Mufasa, he must stop his uncle from conquering the Pride Lands and avenge his father.
The voice cast includes Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Moira Kelly, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, Robert Guillaume, Madge Sinclair, Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin and Jim Cummings.

July 25th “The Help” 8:30 pm
“The Help”

The 2011 film adapted from the novel of the same name by Katheryn Stockett, is about a young white woman, Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, and her relationship with two black maids during the Civil Rights Era. Skeeter is a journalist who decides to write a book from the point of view of the maids, exposing the racism they are faced with as they work for white families. In February 2012, the film received four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress, for Davis, Best Supporting Actress for Chastain, and a win for Best Supporting Actress for Spencer.

July 11th “Waste Land” 8:30 PM

The 2010 documentary follows two years of work by Brazilian contemporary modern artist Vic Muniz in creating art with the cooperation of scavengers of recyclables working at one of the world’s largest landfills, serving the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro , Brazil. Nominated for the Academy Award for best documentary and winner of the best international documentary at Sundance, The film portrays the lives of the garbage pickers and their working conditions as well as Muniz’s efforts to help them to gain recognition and better living conditions.

One of the most legendary directors of our time takes you on an extraordinary adventure. Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton. Starring Ben Kingsley, Sasha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, Christopher Lee and introducing Asa Butterfield as Hugo, the Film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards (winner of 5) in 2012.

Tonite!! First Film of our 8th Season!
So far so good….clouds seem to be breaking up and wait, is that a shadow we see?? Has the sun returned?? Lets keep our collective fingers crossed till this evening.
